What are the benefits of sports massage therapy?

Sports massage is all about applying interventions to combat the negative effects of repetitive actions. It can, therefore, be advantageous to use on anyone whose working lifestyle necessitates repetitious activities such as, driving or desk-based work.

Sports massage was originally designed to help athletes prepare for and recover from training, events, competitions and injuries. Athletic training frequently involves performing the same repetitive activities again and again. These repetitive postures often promote a gradual muscular imbalance which in turn can lead to pain and tension.

Using traditional massage techniques, sports massage has been further developed to incorporate stretches and remedial techniques. Remedial techniques are those with a curative claim. The emphasis on functionality ensures that the therapist approaches their task logically. It is therefore perfectly possible for a treatment to be focused on a specific area or objective rather than a more general maintenance type of massage.

Although sports massage was designed primarily to improve function and performance, it is important to remember that the function requiring improvement need not necessarily be related to a sporting performance. In other words, it is not necessary for an individual to be an athlete or a sports person in order to benefit from the application of sports massage.
