What are the benefits of deep tissue massage?
Deep tissue massage involves warming the areas to be treated and then, as the name suggests, providing a firm massage at a consistent pace and depth. The pace of the massage is relatively slow and often in time with the breath.
Deep tissue massage is very effective at working below the superficial level to release chronic tension. The intention behind deep tissue massage is to disrupt habitual postures and remind our bodies to rest, unwind and that it is possible, for example, to go through the day with relaxed shoulders.
Deep tissue massage promotes the free flow of nutrients and oxygen to the tissues. Deep tissue massage uses classic holistic or Swedish massage techniques in conjunction with other techniques that are often used in sports massage. Expect your therapist to be leaning over you using their elbows, forearms and knuckles as tools, and to exploit gravity by using their weight on your body to achieve pressure of a consistent intensity. This should never be painful.
